NEW—Lakeshore Leopards Rock! Geocaching Fun

Lakeshore students come from all over San Francisco. Many of us spent the pandemic separation feeling cooped up, and hunting around the city for outdoor spaces to keep our little leopards entertained. We saw a fun opportunity to build distanced community connection by compiling a “collective wisdom” map of favorite spots in the city.

Visit the new Lakeshore Leopards Rock! Padlet to get outdoors, discover spots that are special to Lakeshore families, and find those leopard rocks (but please leave them in place for the next family to find).

How does it work?

Each spot is marked with a red and black rock, painted and hidden away by one of our Lakeshore Leopards. Check out where Lakeshore families have made our mark with these leopard-decorated rocks, and help expand our map by sending us your own additional locations!

Click on any location pin to learn why these places are special to Lakeshore families, and plan your own visit to these spots to find the hidden rocks and enjoy getting outdoors. Once you locate a rock, feel free to comment on the item on the Padlet, “like” it by clicking the heart on that item, or send a photo of your family at the spot to leopardsrock@lakeshoreelementary.org. We will feature pictures we receive in upcoming ParentSquare posts, so only send photos you are comfortable granting permission to share with the Lakeshore community.

How do I add my own hidden rock?

This will be a living, growing resource, so everyone is invited to paint and hide your own rock(s) to feature new locations on this map. All you have to do is decorate rocks (any size, any shape!) with a paw print using waterproof markers and/or paint (we recommend acrylic paint or permanent markers like sharpies).

In an attempt to prevent rocks from disappearing, we have been writing messages on the back of the rocks, saying “Please don’t move me!! I’m part of a kids game.”

Leave each rock in a place that’s special to your family and take some photos of the rock in the specific hiding spot you chose for it. Email photos of the rock and the surrounding location to leopardsrock@lakeshoreelementary.org along with your short description of what makes the location fun and special, as well as a “ROCK CLUE” telling families where exactly they can locate the rock.

In your description, we also welcome suggestions for how other families might want to access this location (e.g., tips on parking or transportation) and what fun things there are to do at or near this location (e.g., good food to eat, seasonal activities, festivals, or other events people might want to attend here).

PLEASE NOTE that the Padlet map is on a public website, so be mindful of this when sharing photos and personally identifying information in your description. Only share images of your children’s faces if you are okay with them being posted to this public community resource.

We are starting the map just with San Francisco locations, but we welcome contributions of locations more broadly around the Bay Area or elsewhere in California (if you want to hide a rock in your favorite, more distant, family-friendly locales). We’re so excited to watch the map fill up with great new suggestions over time!
