Come out for this FREE natural building workshop series and Join local natural building experts and educators, ECOSF, in a cooperative community project and professional development opportunity for lakeshore Staff, Parents, and Students, and the broader SFUSD Community.
First workshop Saturday May 3rd, 10Am-4pm
–Additional workshops Saturdays in May 10am-4pm, dates to be announced–
We’ll start laying the foundation of “urbanite” blocks and mixing up the first of many batches of cob, a mixture of clay, sand, and straw. There will be lots of heavy lifting, meditative stone stacking, and of course playing in the mud!
We want to start the project off with an energetic crew so we can finish up the whole foundation and be ready for more cob building in the next workshop.
All ages welcome. Some refreshments will be provided. Feel free to bring something to share and be prepared to have fun and get a little muddy!
See ya there!

General Workshop Series Description
Workshop participants led by ECOSF staff will build a cob bench on the schoolyard using natural materials like sand, clay, straw and stone. These safe, non-toxic, recycled and recyclable materials will be mixed and applied to shape a beautiful, and functional, seating area to be part of the recent green schoolyard upgrades, and provide an outdoor gathering space for lessons, events, and socializing. The project will also be hand decorated by students, parents, staff, and faculty.
The parents, teachers, and students attending the workshop will construct the bench while they learn natural building basics including:
– Building with earth (cob, adobe, etc,)
– Natural finishes and sealants
– Historical perspective on building
– Philosophy of natural building
– Materials identification and preparation
