Garden News
Congratulations to Jean Butler who recently received the award of “Garden Coordinator Outstanding in Her Field” by San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance.
Jean and her students have transformed the campus of Lakeshore school by creating habitats for insects, birds, exotic plants and a nutritional bounty of food for salad parties and edibles that all the kids enjoy eating and learning from. Thank you Jean for creating your vision a reality, we’re all looking forward to the new gardens!

Harvest Festival
Our first Harvest Festival was a huge success. We grossed $10,000 on Saturday and after expenses our net will be around $6,000. It was most rewarding to see the kids have fun! So many people helped make this event a success. Thanks to Susie Wright for designing all the posters, banners, and for her support. Thanks to Ryan Mitsuhasi for delivering the wine and doing all of the heavy lifting. Thanks to Mimi Sarkisian for all her help and support. Thanks to Mariah Bianchi for doing the shopping and everything else. Thanks to Linda Ghnaim, Esther Carmona, Siai Morales, Fanny Szetu, Heather Kearny, Melanie Vose, Sach Steffel, Kim Cruz, Margo Stanley, Keith Wong, Michelle Kuo, Debbie Wong, Melissa McGinn, Patricia Solis, Alison Levy, Stephanie Acuna Twu, Barbara Liu-McDowell, Ivy Li, Charity Kahn, Irene Conte, Helen Chae-Lau, Jane Deming (please forgive me if I forgot anyone) for organizing and running your class booths. Thanks to all of the classes that made the scarecrows. They were really creative! Don’t worry, all scarecrows will get a second viewing during the Halloween event. Thanks to Ken Alexander, David Stockett, Mike Conte, Kristan Simpson, Tess Napili, Ben Polacco, Cherry Zeng, Shannon Hunts, Joe from AmeriCorp, Tyson Yee, Irene Chan, Michelle Chambliss, David Yoda, Elaine Truong, Lyn Bradshaw and everyone else who helped with setup, cleanup, banner hanging and so much more. Thanks to all of the teachers for their support and participation. Thanks to our alumni parent, Rob Shapiro, for doing the balloon animals. Thanks to our local Fire Engine #19 for com- ing and allowing the children to explore their truck! Thanks to Ellen Perieff for getting us the huge BBQ grill. Thanks to Mr. Rich and the children of room 106 for performing at the event. Thanks to the West Sunset Rec Connect Steel Pan Drummers from the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center for performing. Lakeshore’s own, Harris Kahn, is in the band and he plays a mean steel drum! Special thanks to Dan Yee and the Washington High School students for their help with setup and during the event. You guys were awesome.

I want to give a big thanks to Jean Butler and Martha Luna for their amazing work in organizing the wines we sold at the Fall Harvest Festival. We were able to raise over $1000 in sales, with tantalizing wines from across the world. Thanks also to Ben Polacco, Tess Napili, Michelle Kuo, Christopher Null and Mehmet Ergul for their hard work in sorting, pricing, selling (and buying) the wine. – Megumi Fuse (Wine Sale Chair)
