Announcements – March 23

Test Preparation
Test Prep booklets will be sent home with students TODAY! Check your child’s backpack for the test prep booklet. Please continue to work with your child/ren to prepare for the California Standards Test beginning Tuesday, April 12th. Below are a few reminders to get your child ready for STAR testing:
•    Encourage your child to do well but don’t pressure him/her. You may stress him/her out. It is important for your child to stay relaxed on the test.
•    Keep a positive attitude about tests.
•    Mark down test days on your calendar so you and your child are both aware of testing dates.
•    Make sure that your child gets enough sleep on the night before the test.
•    Ensure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and avoid heavy foods that may make him/her groggy and avoid high sugar foods that may make him/her hyper.
•    Make sure that your child gets up early enough so that he/she will be on time to school. Help to support our goal of 100% on time attendance!

Below are key dates for parents to support our test preparation.
FURLOUGH DAY Friday, March 25th

Motor Update
Thank you to all the families who gave to the “Let’s Save Motor” fund- raiser. Including a few families in the 4th and 5th grade classes. I am please to announce that we are VERY close to reaching our overall goal. Kindergarten and 1st grade classes far exceeded their class goals thanks to some very generous donations. However, 2nd and 3rd grade class participation was minimal and have yet to reach their class goals.
If you have not yet donated please bring in a minimum of $5 to contribute to your class “Motor” fund.  Cash or checks payable to “Lakeshore PTA” accepted. (Please write “motor” on the memo line.) Donations are also accepted online at lakeshoreelementary.org. Look for the “Chip-In” box located on the left side of the home page which will be available until 3/23. A special thanks goes out to the many teachers and room parents for their efforts to get all families to participate.

Auction Update
Reminder to families and teachers: Please help with the Annual PTA Fundraising Auction and Winetasting Gala!
The auction is the PTA’s most important fundraising event, and will be held on the evening of april 30, 2011.
You can help by:
1) Registering to attend. Formal invitations with details coming soon. Discounted advance tickets are now available at www. lakeshoreelementary.org.auction.
2) Donating two items to be sold at auction, such as:
•    Services (e.g. lessons in something you’re skilled at)
•    New objects (e.g. artwork or unused items you may have)
•    Gift certificates from your favorite restaurants or stores
•    Tickets to cultural or sporting events
Note: Please avoid purchasing items for donation, as we sell them at a discount. When soliciting gift certificates from businesses, please note that donations are tax-deductible and that these funds are used for many enrichment programs for almost 600 kids. For all donations, please use the donation form previously sent home, download one at http:// lakeshoreelementary.org/ auction/donation_forms.php or find more in the Lakeshore office. Attach form to the item and leave the donation in the auction bin in the Lakeshore School office. Questions? Call Lisa Kadyk or email lakeshore.auction.2010@gmail.com.

Science Fair
Many thanks to all of the classes that participated in this year’s Lakeshore Science Fair and made the event such a success. Your projects were interesting, educational and inspiring. Thanks also to all of the dedicated volunteers who donated their time and effort to make the event possible.

I regret to say that this was my last Lakeshore Science Fair, as my son will graduate this year. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as the Science Fair Chairperson for the last 4 years. A new person (to be decided) will lead next year’s Science Fair. I encourage all students to start thinking about next year’s projects, and parents to consider volunteering.
Thanks. Barry Draper, Lakeshore Science Fair Chairman
