Recap of PTA Program – PBIS Explained with Lisa Bohorquez

On December 13, the PTA invited guest Lisa Bohorquez, the SFUSD Safe and Supportive Schools coach, to the monthly general meeting. This is a short recap of Ms. Bohorquez’s overview of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) –our school district’s approach to managing student behavior and discipline.

As Ms. Bohorquez explained,

“[PBIS] is based in principles of behaviorism and the understanding that positive reinforcement is a more effective way to build self regulation skills in humans with long lasting change. While punishment can be effective, reinforcing behaviors that support learning is more effective in the long run and empowers students to become independent learners.”

PBIS and other supports at our school help to foster a positive school culture and climate, which allows students to focus on learning. The goal is to create a school and classroom environment that is 1) Predictable 2) Consistent 3) Positive and 4) Safe. One aspect of PBIS is the training offered to Lakeshore teachers to help manage their classrooms. They learn to make classroom expectations clear to students and to acknowledge and reinforce pro-social behavior, as well as how to correct behavior and request assistance when necessary.

Other components of Lakeshore’s PBIS program include posters outlining our school’s behavior expectations, Leopard Bucks, PAX and the Second Step curriculum that some teachers use in their classrooms. Ms. Bohorquez handed out postcards with information about Restorative Practices, another program that she unfortunately didn’t have time to explain in depth (samples at right). Teachers can be trained in this program which includes both community building and conflict resolution strategies. Parents are also invited to attend SFUSD trainings on Restorative Practices. Ms. Bohorquez invited families to contact her with questions, at bohorquezL@sfusd.edu. You can view her entire presentation here, with links to research and more information on PBIS, PAX, Second Step and more.
