Announcements – April 14

Budget Update
As Superintendent Garcia indicated in a recent email to all SFUSD employees, the District is proposing to maintain reduced class sizes in K–3 by increasing the number of furlough days for the next two years. This would mean that there is a class size of 22 in kindergarten and first grade and 20 in second and third grade.

Although significant questions remain unresolved regarding the state’s budget as well as labor negotiations, the district decided to issue revised budget allocations that reflect additional Weighted Student Formula funding to maintain K–3 class size. This action is being taken at this time primarily due to practical necessities related to staffing-related timelines. Please note that the total amount of WSF funding that will be included in final budget allocations is still subject to change based on the state budget and final negotiated agreements.

We received a new budget from the district on Wednesday with another $169,000 to allocate. I have met with our teachers, staff and the SSC members and we are pleased to report that we have kept 22 teachers in an assignment at Lakeshore. Please keep in mind that this is a preliminary budget and a final allocation will be distributed in the Fall. Thank you for all of your support, encouragement and understanding during this very challenging time. – Ms. Keener

STAR Testing
STAR testing for grades 2-5 begins the week of April 19th. To minimize the stress on your child during this time, please support him/her at home by:

  • Start your day by being organized. Check your child’s backpack the night before and have him/her get all materials/supplies/homework packed and ready to go!
  • Make sure that your child eats a healthy, balanced breakfast. Limit the  amount of sugar your child eats so that they do not “crash” during the day. Provide healthy snacks.
  • Have a conversation with your child about the test. Discuss their anxiety so that you may provide ideas around how to reduce their stress.
  • Praise your child for doing their best! The testing schedule can be very challenging for some children. Encourage them to do their best, acknowledge their hard work and reward them with praise and recognition. They are working hard!

Bike to School Day
Get ready, set and get on your bikes and bike to school on Thursday, April 15th.  I look forward to seeing our community bike to school. Be sure to practice safety and wear your helmet. I’ll see you on the road!

Thank You!
A huge Thank You to Rachelle Malik, Jelani’s mother, for delivering a very nice refrigerator to the Lakeshore staff lunchroom. A special Thank You to Mrs. Wu for arranging the donation of this fabulous addition to the staff lunchroom. Their time and effort are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lyn

A huge thank you to Ken Alexander and Josie Ramos for running our Read-a-thon once more this year and collecting a whopping $7200 for it. They put in so much work and make a huge difference to the school. And thanks to all the families who participated, and to all you kids who read so much! Boy, if only we could make money reading all year!

Yearbook Photos
We are putting together the 2010 yearbook right now and need photos of 5th-graders ASAP. If you have any photos of current 5th Graders from any year that they have been at Lakeshore (from field trips, school events, etc.), please email them to Phillip Dyer no later than April 15. Thank you! Philip

Lost & Found
Please claim your children’s lost clothes from the Lost & Found rack located in the school lobby. All unclaimed items will be donated to a charity on May 28, 2010. Thanks! Lyn

April SCRIP Order
Earn money for the lakeshore PTA! Order forms for our next Scrip order will be sent home this week. You can purchase prepaid shopping cards and gift cards and have a percentage of your purchase (up to 23%!) donated to the Lakeshore PTA.  This is a great way to earn money for Lakeshore, because the donation comes out of purchases that you would be making anyway. Scrip is available from MANY retailers, so you can purchase Scrip for your everyday needs – groceries, gas, clothing, entertainment, etc., or you can buy gift cards from stores like Borders, See’s Candies, Toys R Us, and Bed Bath and Beyond.

Just complete the order form and return it to school with your child, along with a check. April orders are due on Friday, April 23rd and will be delivered Friday, April 30th.

If you want more information or have any questions about just how Scrip works, please feel free to contact me! Thank you. – Melissa McGinn
