The goal of Lakeshore’s enrichment programs is to provide students with an enriched curriculum in the arts and sciences that works collaboratively with and enhances what they learn in the regular classroom. These programs are mostly funded by Lakeshore’s PTA; some are provided by SFUSD.
Enrichment classes funded by PTA
Science in the Garden, Studio Art, and Motor Perception programs are Lakeshore’s signature core enrichment programs. We also have additional enrichment programs that may vary from year to year. For 2023–24 we are offering Yoga and Capoeira. Some of our past offerings were Choral Music, Visual Art, Theater Arts, Native American Cultural Experience, Afro-Latin Drumming, Movement, Zumba, Architecture, Storytelling, Puberty Education, and Literacy.
See below for our current enrichment programs:
Science in the Garden (TK – 5th Grade)
Consultants: Jean Moshofsky and Martha Luna
Every child (TK-5) at Lakeshore receives gardening instruction in a small class setting from September through May, each year. This is a gardening and science program, centered in an urban agricultural classroom, focusing on environmental sustainability and stewardship. Lakeshore has seven flourishing gardens on site that the children explore, tend and harvest. The students create Science Field Journals that chronicle their observations of plants, soil, insects and birds. This program teaches scientific observation and illustration, as the gardening consultants teach science through nature in the garden.
Motor Perception (TK – 2nd Grade & SDC)
Consultant: Sensorimotor from World of OT
To support our mission of teaching the whole child, grades TK-2 and both SDC classes participate in Motor Perception, a specialized sensory perception program that offers a multitude of benefits for children’s physical and cognitive development. This program combines sensory input with motor skills, helps children enhance their coordination, balance, and fine and gross motor skills; promotes sensory integration, aiding in sensory processing and regulation, crucial for children with sensory sensitivities or disorders; fosters creativity, problem-solving skills and social interaction as children work together on tasks that often involve cooperation and communication. Through this program, we hope to provide an enriching environment where children can grow physically, mentally, and socially while having fun.
The following programs are run by new consultants this year and we are waiting to get descriptions from them. Please visit their website for more information.
